How the light
actually works.
What is light therapy, in plain terms?
A wearable or panel device delivers specific wavelengths of red, near-infrared and blue light to your skin. The light is absorbed by your skin cells and prompts a process called photobiomodulation — in effect, giving cells an energy boost that supports the skin's own repair and collagen-making activity. Nothing is injected, heated aggressively, or forced; the skin does the work, the light just encourages it.
What is a VCSEL, and why does Peakspan use it?
VCSEL stands for Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Laser — a laser diode that emits a narrow, circular beam directly from the chip surface. Because they are small and efficient, hundreds can be packed into a mask-sized array.
The practical difference from an ordinary LED is delivery: a VCSEL projects a tight beam of roughly 20°, while an LED spreads light over about 120°. More of the light lands on your face instead of scattering into the room, and a laser emits at a tighter, more specific wavelength than an LED's broader spread. It is a better way to deliver light — not a different biology.
Is a laser mask actually "better" than an LED mask?
Better at delivering light. Not biologically different. Both work through the same pathway — photons absorbed by an enzyme called cytochrome c oxidase inside your cells' mitochondria.
One claim you should ignore — including when other brands make it — is that laser light "penetrates deeper because it's coherent." Coherence is lost within the first 1–2 mm of skin as photons scatter off cells and collagen. Penetration depth is set by wavelength; biological effect is set by dose. Published photobiology has consistently found coherent and non-coherent light produce comparable results when wavelength and dose are matched. We would rather tell you that than sell you a myth.
Does light therapy actually work, or is it hype?
It works — within limits, and the limits are worth knowing. Photobiomodulation is one of the better-researched areas in cosmetic dermatology. A 2023 systematic review and meta-analysis covering 31 randomised controlled trials found LED light therapy beneficial for skin rejuvenation and blemish-prone skin. An often-cited 2007 split-face randomised trial of 76 participants, using 633 nm and 830 nm light, measured up to a 36% reduction in the appearance of wrinkles and a 19% improvement in elasticity over four weeks, with collagen and elastin increases confirmed on biopsy.
This is general research about the modality, not a claim about any one device, and results vary between people. What it will not do: replace a facelift, erase deep-set lines, or produce dramatic change in days. It is gradual and cumulative.
What does each wavelength reach?
Different wavelengths are absorbed at different depths — this is physics of delivery, not a promise of outcome. Blue (~460 nm) stays at the surface, the zone studied for the bacteria associated with blemishes. Red (~630–660 nm) reaches the upper dermis, studied for fine lines, firmness and calming visible redness. Near-infrared (~810–850 nm) travels deeper toward the layer where collagen-producing fibroblasts live. Infrared (~1064 nm) is the deepest of the group, with evidence for deep dermal firmness still emerging. Firing them together lets one session cover the full stack.

Red-light skincare has a real name — photobiomodulation — and a real, peer-reviewed literature. Here is the honest version, marketing haze removed.
The mechanism
Red and near-infrared photons are absorbed by cytochrome c oxidase in the mitochondria, releasing nitric oxide that had been blocking the enzyme. Cellular energy (ATP) rises, microcirculation improves, and mild signalling molecules prompt fibroblasts — your collagen-producing cells — to become more active. More active fibroblasts means more collagen and elastin over time.
The wavelengths
Red light is absorbed mostly in the skin's upper layers — tone and texture territory. Near-infrared passes deeper, toward the dermis. Neither is ionising, and neither heats the skin beyond a gentle warmth. This is the same non-invasive family of light used in dermatology research, delivered at home.
The evidence
PubMed indexes thousands of photobiomodulation papers, including randomised trials on skin photoaging. Across them, consistent use of red and near-infrared light is associated with measurable improvements in elasticity and the appearance of fine lines. Study sizes are typically modest — consistency matters more than intensity.
The honest limits
Photobiomodulation is not a medical treatment, and a home device is not a clinic. It will not remove deep wrinkles or replace sunscreen. The realistic expectation from the literature: skin that looks gradually firmer, brighter and more even with regular use over weeks — no overnight change, and no guarantee.

How long until I see results?
Published research measures meaningful change at 8–12 weeks of consistent use. Many people notice something earlier — around weeks 2–3, skin often looks brighter and plumper. That is genuine, but it is mostly improved circulation and hydration rather than structural change; collagen remodelling is slow. Be sceptical of any brand promising visible results in a week. We would rather set the expectation honestly than have you disappointed in month two.
If I use it twice as long, will I get results faster?
No — and this is one of the most useful things to understand. Photobiomodulation follows a biphasic dose response: too little light does nothing, the right dose produces the effect, and too much can reduce or reverse it. More is genuinely not better. Stick to the recommended session length; consistency over weeks matters far more than the length of any single session.
Do I need to keep using it?
Yes, to maintain results. Light therapy supports an ongoing biological process rather than making a one-time change. Most people move to a lighter maintenance rhythm after the initial 12 weeks — typically three to four sessions a week instead of daily.
Will results differ with my age or skin type?
Somewhat. Skin with more accumulated sun damage and slower cell turnover often shows more visible change, simply because there is more to improve. Younger skin tends to see subtler results focused on radiance and texture. We test everything. An instrument earns a place in the collection only after it survives our own inspection — the format, the light or thermal behaviour, the materials against the skin, the way it feels to live with. Then we publish its honest limits alongside its strengths. If something cannot clear that bar, it does not launch. Curation is the product.
What does "Dubai × Shenzhen" actually mean?
Shenzhen is where the world's most advanced photonics and thermal manufacturing sits — the same source the best names in the category quietly draw from. Dubai is where we set the standard: selection, configuration and service for the UAE. We go to the source, choose the best build, and finish it to a standard we would put in our own homes. That access is the trust — not a logo.
Is this just a generic device with a new badge?
No. We select at the source rather than commission a hollow rebrand, and every unit is verified and configured for the UAE before it reaches you — voltage, language, service, documentation. The value is in what we refuse as much as what we ship: the units that do not measure up never make it to the collection.
Why don't you show doctor or celebrity endorsements?
Because doing it properly is the only lawful way, and we will not fake it. Using a named doctor or celebrity to sell a product requires their signed agreement — quoting a dermatologist's general praise on a product page creates an implied endorsement, which is restricted in the UAE and unlawful in most markets. Instead we cite the published, peer-reviewed research itself, and publish our own conformity documents on the science & safety page. When a named, consented, independent assessment of a device exists, you will see it — real, not borrowed.
Why are you so careful with what you claim?
Because these are cosmetic wellness instruments, not medical devices, and many claims in this category outrun the evidence for at-home use. A device can be engineered to medical-grade standards while being sold, honestly, as a wellness product — what separates the two categories is the claims made, not the build quality. Our restraint is a positioning choice, not a shortcut.

Where do you deliver?

How does a mask arrive versus a large instrument?
Wearable and panel instruments arrive by premium courier — expected within roughly 2–4 days inside the UAE at launch. The larger instruments, the ice bath and the sauna, are handled differently: our UAE team surveys your space, delivers, places and commissions the unit for you. You do not wrestle a chamber into a corner — we install it and leave it working.
What is the white-glove service, exactly?
For the ice bath and sauna it is a survey of your space and power, scheduled delivery, physical placement, connection and a working handover — the whole path from crate to first session, done by us. Lead times for large instruments are scheduled around that install and confirmed when you order, rather than promised as a courier window.
Do I need anything prepared at home?
The larger instruments need appropriate power, water or space; the survey exists precisely so nothing is a surprise on delivery day. Wearable instruments need only a socket to charge. If your space has a constraint, tell us early and we will design around it.

Is it safe?
For most healthy adults using it as directed, yes. Red and near-infrared light therapy has a well-established safety record and does not damage skin the way UV light does — no cancer risk, and no burns at correct intensities. The three genuine risk areas are eye exposure, heat, and users who are light-sensitive because of medication or a medical condition. Each is covered below.
Is it safe for my eyes? Do I need goggles?
Eye safety is the most important question you can ask about anything worn on your face. What to look for in any mask is an IEC 60825-1 laser classification of Class 1 or Class 1C — Class 1 means eye-safe under all reasonably foreseeable use, and Class 1C is the classification created specifically for skin-contact cosmetic devices. Anything rated Class 2, 3R or higher carries a genuine viewing hazard and should not be worn near the eyes. The Peakspan mask has an opaque eye zone and built-in shields, but its own laser safety classification is still being assessed — it is listed as in process on our conformity page, and until the report is verified and published there we do not claim a class for it and do not tell you that goggles are unnecessary. Whatever the device: never look directly into the emitters while a mask is switched on and off your face.
What certifications should I look for — and what do you hold?
Ask any brand for these, and ask for the test report referencing the specific model — not a logo on a webpage: IEC 60825-1 (laser safety class), IEC 62471 (photobiological safety), IEC 60601-1 (electrical safety), IEC 60601-1-2 (electromagnetic compatibility), ISO 10993 (biocompatibility of materials touching the skin), ISO 13485 (a traceable device-quality system) and RoHS (free from restricted hazardous substances). Is it FDA-cleared?
No — and it is worth explaining the phrase, because it is one of the most stretched claims in this category. "FDA cleared" is not "FDA approved": clearance means a device was shown to be substantially equivalent to one already on the market, while approval is a far more rigorous process for high-risk devices. FDA clearance applies to devices sold in the United States making medical claims. Peakspan instruments are sold in the UAE as cosmetic wellness devices, regulated here under the Emirates Conformity Assessment Scheme rather than as medical devices. If a brand claims to be "the only FDA-cleared" anything, a genuine clearance has a public K-number you can look up yourself — ask for it.
Can I use it if I have melasma or dark spots?
Please read this one carefully — it matters more in this region than most. There is no reliable evidence that red or near-infrared light improves melasma, and there are two real risks: heat can aggravate melasma, and blue light can stimulate pigment production, particularly in Fitzpatrick skin types III–VI, which describes a large proportion of people across the UAE and GCC. If you have melasma or are prone to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, speak to a dermatologist first. If you proceed, patch-test a small area for two weeks, favour the red and near-infrared modes over blue, keep sessions short, and stop if pigmentation darkens.
Is it safe for darker skin tones?
For red and near-infrared light, yes. Unlike IPL or laser hair removal, photobiomodulation does not target melanin, so it does not carry the burn or pigment-damage risk those treatments can on deeper skin tones. The nuances are blue light and heat, both of which can trigger a pigment response in some people — patch-test first, and read the melasma answer above.
Who should not use it, or check with a doctor first?
Check with your doctor first if you take medication that increases light sensitivity — isotretinoin and topical retinoids, some antibiotics, certain diuretics, antifungals, St John's Wort or certain chemotherapy agents — or if you have a photosensitivity condition such as lupus or porphyria, photosensitive epilepsy, an eye condition affecting the retina, active skin cancer or any undiagnosed lesion in the area. Do not use over open wounds or active rashes. There is no evidence of harm in pregnancy, but no safety trials either, so check with your doctor. We recommend use for adults 18 and over. This list is not exhaustive — if in doubt, ask.
Have there been safety problems with masks in this category?
Yes, and you should know about it. In 2019 a major brand voluntarily recalled a light-therapy mask, citing a theoretical eye-injury risk for a small subset of people with certain underlying eye conditions or taking light-sensitising medication; reported effects were rare and generally transient. The lesson is not that light masks are dangerous — it is that eye-protection design and honest contraindication warnings matter, and that if you are light-sensitive for any reason you should check before using one.

Is there a warranty?
Yes — one year from purchase, covering manufacturing defects, serviced here in the UAE. If something is wrong with the build, we make it right without shipping your instrument to another continent.
What if it doesn't work for me?
Returns are agreed in writing with your quotation before an order is accepted. One honest caveat about trial periods generally: thirty days is not long enough to judge collagen-related change, which needs 8–12 weeks — so please read the results section first. The guarantee exists so you are never stuck with a device you dislike using, not as a results trial.
Where does it fit in my skincare routine?
On clean, dry, bare skin — before serums and moisturiser. Light penetrates skin, not product: makeup, sunscreen, oils and thick creams reflect or absorb light before it reaches you. Cleanse, dry, run your session, then apply skincare afterwards, when circulation is elevated. Keep retinoids to a separate time of day, since they raise light sensitivity.
How do I clean and care for it?
Wipe the inner surface of a mask with a soft, slightly damp cloth or an alcohol-free wipe after each use, and let it dry fully. Never submerge it, and never use abrasive cleaners on the emitter surface. Larger instruments come with their own maintenance guidance at handover.
